Samsung galaxy tab, pause also fails - you tap the button and literally nothing happens. The only way to stop the streaming is to use Back button to exit the program. Also, no idea why, but I can't get it to work over 3G on my Nexus One. However it is working for my galaxy tab over 3G, so I'm sure my backend configuration and network is correct. Confusingly, it works fine over LAN for nexus one. Obviously my network/server is fine because it works 3G and LAN for galaxy tab.... very strange. Otherwise great work.
Hey, I can get this to work. However, I can't get it to stream my .flv files. The description on Android Market says that the player can play .flv files among an assortment of other file types. Is "streaming" of flv files NOT a feature of VLCdirect?
Hi, you should be able to stream .flv files without problem. Please send me a private mail to pablobesada@gmail.com, and we can do some tests to see what is wrong. regards,

Hi Pablo, just bought your app, works good. Only thing is, that some mkv-files cause vlc to crash on the pc when i try to stream them to my samsung gs2. Any idea how to avoid this?
Hi, I am working on a fix for some specific mkv files which crash VLC Media Player. I hope a new version with the fix will be available for update this weekend. Please send me an email to pablobesada@gmail.com, so we can check if your mkv problem will be fixed with the next update.
Is it possible to stream from my computer's VLC to my Android phone over 4G network? I've been trying through your site but i cannot find a documentation for it.
I have enabled the WEB Interface on my VLC player. It works if I just use WIFI through my network but it doesn't work if I choose to just use 4G network. What's the workaround?
VLC Direct can stream using 3G/4G, but it will depend if your carrier allows the RTSP packets pass through its network. Most carriers block streaming packets.
Anyway the easiest way to stream through 3G/4G is to make a VPN between your PC and your android. With this configuration, VLC Direct wont even know that it is getting the streaming from outside the LAN. If you need further help, please send me an email to pablobesada@gmail.com Best Regards
Hi, I didn't receive any report from users about network problems regarding VLC Direct or VLC Direct Pro. Does your problem shows up when browsing your PC files in the third tab or just when streaming? If it is just when streaming, it happens when streaming in both ways? About width/height drop down list, the thing is that there are hundreds of screen size combinations avaiable in the market.
1. With VLC running on the desktop and web interface selected.
2. I make a wifi connection, the default target is VLC and hide non video files is selected.
3. I select a video from the file list and play the video on the network VLC on my pc desktop. No problem.
4. I stop playing and switch target to Android.
5. I select and try to play the same network video on the Android but video i too big so i stop playback, go to the setup screen and lower frame and bit rates.
6. I go back to the VLC Direct control interface and discover that the file list is missing. Clicking the UP arrow does not help, tapping the PC icon does not help, tapping on the menu refresh button does not help, going to the setup screen and reconnecting does not help bring back the file list.
It appears that if you go to the setup screen while "hide non video files" is selected and return to the control screen, the file list will not reappear unless you unselect the "hide non video files" button.
I also noticed that when i switched back to the VLC target, a progress bar appeared at the bottom of the screen indicating the the network VLC was still playing a video when i looked at the network VLC player on the PC, there was no video playing.
I guess the problem is not with the connection being lost frequently, its with the file list being blocked by the "non video files" button being selected while moving back and forth between the control screen and setup.
It just initially looked as if the connection was being lost because the file list was being blocked.
Hi, I am trying to reproduce your problem without luck. I think the "hide non videos files" has nothing to do with the problem. From what you say, It seems to me that VLC Media Player stopped responding to its web interface (sometimes it happens). You can check if vlc is responding entering to this url in your pc browser:
Here are a few notes after using the product for a few hours.
0. This is a very nice program you created. The framework and functionality is nicely thought out - right on! I just see a little room for improvement...
1. it would be nice to see a connection status bar at the top or bottom of the screen.
2. If they already don't do it, it would be nice if tapping the local video/audio and network video icons would not only select that function but also refresh the file list as well on subsequent taps.
3. it would be nice to not have to go to the setup screen to tap the refesh button or reconnect to the network device. There should be a refresh and reconnect bar or button on the control screen.
If there was a connection status bar on the control screen, maybe that bar could be tapped to reconnect - unless reconnection is already automatic on connection loss.
4. when you insert "-I http" into the VLC shortcut, and restart VLC, VLC will run in the background by default and not show its screen interface.
So if you select VLC as a target on the VLC Direct, you will not see anything on your PC screen.
5. your VLC Direct website needs to be updated to include a discription of the new interface and features of VLC Direct.
Also, an explanation of the control and setup functions would be nice.
Thanks for the tips! I really appreciate the time you took for writing them!
about point 0: thank you very much! about point 1: I will think about it. about point 2: I think that could be optional. about point 4: even when VLC is running in background, it opens a video window when you start streaming from android to pc. about point 5: I know! you are 100%, I will try to do it asap

Hi Nelson, question: does it happens every time you go to settings and back? or just sometimes? Does it happens when you are in any folder or just when you are in some specific folders? regards!
Yes, of course you can uninstall VLC Direct pro and install it again, but it wont change anything. One possiblity for the problem is the following: VLC Direct and VLC Direct Pro do a http request to vlc with a timeout of 500ms for fetch the current folder. If you have a LOT of files in a folder, a timeout exception could raise and you will see an empty folder. This is why I am asking if this issue is happening for any folder or just for some specific folders.
Sorry, I didnt answered one of your questions: There are no share files between both apps, so dont worry, You can have both installed or just one, they are absolutely independent apps.
I have force stopped and cleared data on the app 4 times. Afterwards each time...
1. i restart VLC Pro 2. tap "Next" on the "Welcome to VLV Direct" dialog window. 3. tap "Start" on the "Automatic VLC Finder" dialog window. 4. it finds the connection. 5. tap "Close Tips" on the "Tips" dialog window. 6. the default is; target: VLC, local: video icon. 7. i select the PC icon - no file list! 8. i wait to see if the app will refresh the file list.... 1min... 2mins - nope! 9. tap the "non video files" button - bingo - file list appears! 10. i go to the setup screen - do nothing - and tap the phone's back button and dam! the file list is gone! 11. tap the "non video files" button and bingo again... the file list appears!
it's happening for whatever default folder VLC Direct gets.
After i get the initial folder/file list, i tapped the up arrow to get the parent folder contents. I then selected the My Documents folder as a test. As soon as i selected the My Documents folder, the list disappeared and tapping the up arrow button does nothing.
I am really trying to reproduce your problem in my device, but no luck at all! Just to get this straight:
When you have non-video files hidden you can browse files without problem. When you have non-video files shown you dont see any file in the third tab. Am I right?
I am testing it in a HTC Desire and in a Galaxy Tab P1000, both on Android 2.2 Anyway, I will working on this. I am sure there is a problem and I believe I will be able to find it and fix it as soon as possible. I am pretty sure it as nothing to do with the android version.
I have a few more observations after using VLC Direct Pro for two days on my T-mobile MyTouch 4G running Android 2.3.4.
The product overall works pretty good with a few exceptions that are very consistant...
1. When the file list does not appear, pressing the apps "clear data" under my phone's applications menu does the trick.
2. every time i select a video to play on the network VLC player, VLC play's the video but VLC Direct Pro giving me several "VLC Media Player not found in..." messages. It lasts for about 30 seconds during which time i can't pause or full screen the network player.
Wish List... It would be nice to see a progress bar or indicator to let me know the app is working and not hung up while waiting for a remote video to start playing on the app.
Hi Pablo. it looks like that by default, as soon as you install the soft or after "clear data" as per Nelson, that the remote PC directory is My Documents of the user. So in order to have access to My Documents, just bookmark that folder before pushing any other key.
Hey. Great work thanks. But I'm asking myself: Is there a possibility to have a playlist of files that should be played on the android device. I can see the vlc playlist of the computer and i can start playing a file from there. but playing stops after one title. the next title is played on the computer, but not on the device. i have to start the next title manually. is there a way to change this?
Hi, Thanks for a great app! I've bought the pro version and it's totally awesome. I've only found one thing missing and that's a way to choose from subtitles included in the video file itself. For example I have a .mkv file that includes a number of different subtitles. In vlc I can go to the menu video->subtitles and there select a subtitle that's encoded (if that's the right word) into the .mkv file itself.
Would you please add this request to your TODO list! :)
Hi Johan, thank you for your feeback. The feature is kind of difficult to implement because, at the moment, the android streaming engine doesn't support displaying subtitles that are encoded inside the file. But I will think about it, and see if there is another way to do it. cheers!
Hola Pablo- You have made a really cool app. I'm still playing with the free version, but after payday I'm going to buy it! I am a sysadmin at a school and I have been telling people for years that vlc is the BEST player. You have given us yet another reason to love it!
Saludos!
I am using VLC Direct Pro on my Viewsonic gTablet running Android Froyo. When I want to use the application to view an AVI file, I get the error message "cannot connect to VLC player. Go to menu -> settings -> connection. Under "Streaming" it is set to "Using internal player." If I try the Automatic Connection Wizard, I get no result. Since I only want to play files that are loaded on the device locally, should I be configuring it to look at localhost & some specific port number?
Can I stream to multiple devices simultaneously? Two different movies? IE I want to be able to watch one show on one phone/tablet, and a different show on another. Is this possible? Thanks.
Yes, you can. You must start 2 vlc instances in your pc, and set a different port for the web interface for each instance (i.e.: 8080 in one and 8081 in the other). Then you can connect with VLC Direct from each device, one to 8080 and the other to 8081. Best Regards,
Hello, I have been looking for an Android media server to stream music from my soon-to-be-upgraded-to-Honeycomb Logitech Revue to my other Android devices. Is VLC Direct the answer to my question?
Hi Aqualung, I can't answer your question, but I recommend you to try VLC Direct (the free version) and see if it fits your needs. I will be here for any help you could need. Regards!
Good work, thank you! Is there a way to search for files on the PC from the Android device? The music collection is far too big to always search files manually.
Go to menu-> setting->Connection to VLC Media Player.
hi.. i have been using vlc direct pro v3.9 with my htc wildfire and it has been great. i just upgraded to the latest version, the one with the subtitle support and the playback quality on my phone (streaming from my pc) is really bad: the video is choppy and totally out of synch with sound. is it because of the subtitles? is there a way to fix this? thanx..
...hmmm i have to say technology is really weird: I re-intsalled the previous version, and now i am somewhere in-between: i got the old interface back, and the playback quality got fixed, but the subtitle support somehow remained and now i can read srt! i don't know if this is a valid fix, but it worked for me.. :)
Alright, Honeycomb for Logitech's Revue is (almost) here!! Is there any way you can make sure that your application will show up in the Android Market on Revue (see restrictions here: http://pages.citebite.com/p1a1h8s1b9giy)? Many thanks!
Just make sure VLC Direct plays by these rules (http://goo.gl/Rr8bO), and it will show up in the list of applications compatible with the Revue. See also the answer here: http://goo.gl/AlgRT.
Hi Aqualung, yes, touchscreen support seems to be an important issue. Could you please send me an email to qdevplus @ gmail. com? I would like to do somes tests. regards!
Here's one even more important: http://code.google.com/tv/. (Or here: http://youtu.be/CxLL-sR6XfM, though this one might not have been updated for the latest Google TV release (Honeycomb).) Anyway, I'd love to see your application available in the Revue Market.
I want to use this with my laptop at work where I have no access to the internet. How can I configure my laptap to communicate via my wifi card without an internet connection? I purchased the PRO version yesterday, if I cannot use it this way I have no use for it.
Hi James, you don't need to have internet connection, but both the android device and the laptop must be connected to the same router -that router don't need to have internet connection)-. As long as you have that, then VLC Direct should be able to find the web interface your your laptop VLC. Regards.
Ok, I am not sure if this will work... but you can try to build an "ad hoc" network between the laptop and the android device. I never did this, so I can't assure you it will work. regards!
Hello... I would like to stream mp3s from my Android (OD, running 2.2.2). The issue is that they are podcasts I don't want to show up as music files--so I've tagged their folder as "nomedia." As a result (at least I think this is the problem) they won't show up in VLC Direct to play or stream. Is it possible to fix this, either by making it possible to play the "nomedia" files from VLC?
You mean you renamed mp3 files, and now those files have a .nomedia extension instead of .mp3? That will be problem for VLC Direct, because extensions is the only way VLC Direct has to predict what kind of media is a file. I don't think it will work this way. You should try to keep file extensions.
Sorry, I should have been clearer. In each of the folders where I keep podcasts there is a 0kb file titled <.nomedia>. This keeps the music player in the phone from seeing the podcast files as media files. (I use the doggcatcher app--which does this automatically).
Ok now I understand your problem. In normal conditions you should find those mp3 files in the second tab of VLC Direct. If they don't appear, that's because android is not indexing the folder (the .nomedia tells android to no index the folder in its media database) Unfortunately this is out of VLC Direct control, if android doesn't index the folder VLC Direct has no way find the files, sorry.
I got VLC Direct Pro from Android Market, and I have problems making it work between my phone (a Galaxy Nexus with ICS) and one of my home computers (an iMac). The phone is on a 192.168.0/24 network, the iMac is on 192.168.1/24 network with a router in between.
I've configured VLC Direct Pro manually with the IP of the iMac, and your application reports success connecting.
When I try to start streaming something from the Phone, the player on the iMac, as expected, starts trying (I see in Playlist showing http://192.168.1.90:4444/1).
The problem is, it then it fails, it seems that VLC Player on the iMac is unable to connect back on the phone on port 4444 (btw., is that port, 4444, what you expect?).
Is there something I am missing in the configuration or streaming over a router in not supported?
Hi Robert, port 4444 is used for http streaming from Android to Mac. If you want to stream from device to Mac, then you need to forward the port 4444 to the device in your router. If you want to stream from Mac to Android, the thing is different because the streaming is through RTSP protocol which uses a lot of ports, not just one like http. In this case the best solution is to establish a VPN between your device and your Mac. With this approach you will be able to stream in any direction because both devices will be logically in the same LAN network (i.e. one with ip 192.168.0.31 and the other with ip 192.168.0.32). Send me a email to qdevplus@gmail is you need further help.
VLC Direct Pro issue: I an trying to stream from my Mac to Android Zoom. The devices are on the same subnet. I can pick the movie I want to watch on my Mac, by selecting it on the droid. It shows up in the Playlist and play it on the Mac. When I switch over to the Android, it says buffering video and never progresses further. I have tried several different movies, but always the same results. Music streams with out any issue.
Also, does the application support streaming different media to two devices at the same time?
hi id just like to know if i can stream movies to my moto defy using this app? i tried the free version but unfortunately the video stutters quite a lot.. id like to buy the pro version but i need to know if theres a way to improve playback?

ReplyDeleteYou may want to add "I'm reinstalling the app" as another option to your "Why removed" questionnaire.
jeje, this is a google questionnarie.
ReplyDeleteI am really trying to reproduce your problem in my device, but no luck at all!
Just to get this straight:
When you have non-video files hidden you can browse files without problem.
When you have non-video files shown you dont see any file in the third tab.
Am I right?
I have a Doubt: Is this happening only in VLC Direct Pro? VLC Direct (free) works just fine?
ReplyDeleteNo, i had the same problem with VLC DIrect free.
ReplyDeleteIs this app certifed for the MyTouch 4G Android version 2.3.4?
I don't mean to insult you, but maybe it does not work correctly on all Android phones and Android versions.
I'll see if i can find someone i know that has an Android phone and get them to install VLC Direct Free on it to see how it works.
What Android phone and Android version are you testing VLC Direct Pro or Free on?
In any case, i still like the app and will just force stop and restart the app when needed.
I am testing it in a HTC Desire and in a Galaxy Tab P1000, both on Android 2.2
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I will working on this. I am sure there is a problem and I believe I will be able to find it and fix it as soon as possible. I am pretty sure it as nothing to do with the android version.
regards!
BTW, i tried playing a video on the server with -I http.
ReplyDeleteThis time it did display the video, so i stand corrected on that issue.
I still love the app! I look forward to your updates. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteIf you need me to test anything out for you on my Mytouch 4G Android 2.3.4 - just ask, i love to tinker and upsets don't bother me.
I can be reached at sales@nados.com or skype at nxmaldonado.
cool thank you very much for your time and feedback!
ReplyDeletePablo,
ReplyDeleteI have a few more observations after using VLC Direct Pro for two days on my T-mobile MyTouch 4G running Android 2.3.4.
Thank you for the feedback. I will work on those points. Regards!
ReplyDeleteHi Pablo,
ReplyDeleteexactly the same problem as Nelson. I have a HTC Desire Android 2.2.
The same problem with the paid or free version.
Thanks.
Great soft.
Hi Pablo.
ReplyDeleteit looks like that by default, as soon as you install the soft or after "clear data" as per Nelson, that the remote PC directory is My Documents of the user. So in order to have access to My Documents, just bookmark that folder before pushing any other key.
Hi, I believe I found the problem. I will try to release an update today. Thanks you all for the feedback!
ReplyDeleteHey. Great work thanks.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm asking myself: Is there a possibility to have a playlist of files that should be played on the android device. I can see the vlc playlist of the computer and i can start playing a file from there. but playing stops after one title. the next title is played on the computer, but not on the device. i have to start the next title manually. is there a way to change this?
Hi Stefan, that feature is not available yet. It is planned for future versions.
ReplyDeleteHola Pablo,
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great app!
Cheers!
Hi Johan, thank you for your feeback. The feature is kind of difficult to implement because, at the moment, the android streaming engine doesn't support displaying subtitles that are encoded inside the file. But I will think about it, and see if there is another way to do it. cheers!
ReplyDeleteHola Pablo-
ReplyDeleteYou have made a really cool app. I'm still playing with the free version, but after payday I'm going to buy it! I am a sysadmin at a school and I have been telling people for years that vlc is the BEST player. You have given us yet another reason to love it!
Thank you very much! It is really nice to hear that.
ReplyDeleteHi, please follow "Connecting to VLC Media Player". If you still can't connect, please send me an email to qdevplus@gmail.com. Regards
ReplyDeleteCan I stream to multiple devices simultaneously? Two different movies? IE I want to be able to watch one show on one phone/tablet, and a different show on another. Is this possible? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYes, you can. You must start 2 vlc instances in your pc, and set a different port for the web interface for each instance (i.e.: 8080 in one and 8081 in the other). Then you can connect with VLC Direct from each device, one to 8080 and the other to 8081. Best Regards,

ReplyDeleteHello, I have been looking for an Android media server to stream music from my soon-to-be-upgraded-to-Honeycomb Logitech Revue to my other Android devices. Is VLC Direct the answer to my question?
ReplyDeleteHi Aqualung, I can't answer your question, but I recommend you to try VLC Direct (the free version) and see if it fits your needs. I will be here for any help you could need. Regards!
ReplyDeleteGood work, thank you! Is there a way to search for files on the PC from the Android device? The music collection is far too big to always search files manually.
ReplyDeleteGreets
Hi Kevin,
ReplyDeleteThat feature is not available so far. I don't know if this will help, but you can use bookmaks to speed up your browsing.
OK, thanks for the super fast answer :-)
ReplyDeleteHi, not sure if this has ben asked already... Whenever I try to play a .MOV file on my galaxy s2, the pc app shuts down...please help.
ReplyDeleteThnx in advance
Hi Sales, could you please send me an email to:
ReplyDeleteqdevplus @ gmail . com? thanks!
Bonjour
VLC connection missing. Go to menu-> setting->Connection to VLC Media Player.
Que dois-je faire ???

Hi zitunes, please follow the tutorial for connecting VLC Direct with VLC Player:

anyway send me a email to qdevplus @gmail . com
if you need further help.
hi.. i have been using vlc direct pro v3.9 with my htc wildfire and it has been great. i just upgraded to the latest version, the one with the subtitle support and the playback quality on my phone (streaming from my pc) is really bad: the video is choppy and totally out of synch with sound. is it because of the subtitles? is there a way to fix this? thanx..
ReplyDelete...hmmm i have to say technology is really weird: I re-intsalled the previous version, and now i am somewhere in-between: i got the old interface back, and the playback quality got fixed, but the subtitle support somehow remained and now i can read srt! i don't know if this is a valid fix, but it worked for me.. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, it is strange... anyway v6.7 has a lot of fixes and improvements. I recommend you to give v6.7 another try. It worth it. best regards.
ReplyDeleteAlright, Honeycomb for Logitech's Revue is (almost) here!! Is there any way you can make sure that your application will show up in the Android Market on Revue (see restrictions here: http://pages.citebite.com/p1a1h8s1b9giy)? Many thanks!
ReplyDeleteI am not familiar with Revue. I will check it. Regards!
ReplyDeleteJust make sure VLC Direct plays by these rules (http://goo.gl/Rr8bO), and it will show up in the list of applications compatible with the Revue. See also the answer here: http://goo.gl/AlgRT.
ReplyDeleteProbably the most important support requirements are the ones listed here: http://goo.gl/6SAQ9 (esp. the one about "Touchscreen support").
ReplyDeleteHi Aqualung, yes, touchscreen support seems to be an important issue. Could you please send me an email to qdevplus @ gmail. com? I would like to do somes tests. regards!
ReplyDeleteHere's one even more important: http://code.google.com/tv/. (Or here: http://youtu.be/CxLL-sR6XfM, though this one might not have been updated for the latest Google TV release (Honeycomb).) Anyway, I'd love to see your application available in the Revue Market.
ReplyDeleteI want to use this with my laptop at work where I have no access to the internet. How can I configure my laptap to communicate via my wifi card without an internet connection? I purchased the PRO version yesterday, if I cannot use it this way I have no use for it.
ReplyDeleteHi James, you don't need to have internet connection, but both the android device and the laptop must be connected to the same router -that router don't need to have internet connection)-. As long as you have that, then VLC Direct should be able to find the web interface your your laptop VLC. Regards.
ReplyDeleteThanx Pablo, but at work it's just me and my laptop. No router, no WIFI.
ReplyDeleteOk, I am not sure if this will work... but you can try to build an "ad hoc" network between the laptop and the android device. I never did this, so I can't assure you it will work. regards!
ReplyDeleteHello...
ReplyDeleteHi JRW
ReplyDeleteYou mean you renamed mp3 files, and now those files have a .nomedia extension instead of .mp3?
That will be problem for VLC Direct, because extensions is the only way VLC Direct has to predict what kind of media is a file. I don't think it will work this way. You should try to keep file extensions.
Sorry, I should have been clearer. In each of the folders where I keep podcasts there is a 0kb file titled <.nomedia>. This keeps the music player in the phone from seeing the podcast files as media files. (I use the doggcatcher app--which does this automatically).
ReplyDeleteOk I see. In that case VLC Direct will be able to stream those files as they are .mp3 files,
ReplyDeletebut there's no way to hide the files in VLC Direct.
No way to hide the files or no way to show the files? My problem is that the files aren't showing in VLC direct.
ReplyDeleteHi JRW,
ReplyDeleteno way to hide the files, as long as the files are .mp3 files.
Question: your files are stored in your phone/tablet or in your PC?
On the phone. I'd like to stream them from the phone to the computer. I just can't get them to show up in VLC Direct Pro.
ReplyDeleteOk now I understand your problem.
ReplyDeleteIn normal conditions you should find those mp3 files in the second tab of VLC Direct. If they don't appear, that's because android is not indexing the folder (the .nomedia tells android to no index the folder in its media database)
Unfortunately this is out of VLC Direct control, if android doesn't index the folder VLC Direct has no way find the files, sorry.
okay now i am an ultra n00b and just want to have a step by step guide in setting everything right from the network to playing files please.....
ReplyDeleteHi Prateek,
ReplyDeleteYou can follow this step by step guide:
http://vlcdirect.blogspot.com/2011/05/vlc-direct-manual-de-configuracion.html
Hi Pablo,
ReplyDeleteI got VLC Direct Pro from Android Market, and I have problems making it work between my phone (a Galaxy Nexus with ICS) and one of my home computers (an iMac).
ReplyDeleteIf you want to stream from Mac to Android, the thing is different because the streaming is through RTSP protocol which uses a lot of ports, not just one like http.
I hd indtalled vlc direct from.andriod market but not able to.use the same on my dell streak plz sugget setting required
ReplyDeleteYou might have to connect to VLC Player in PC. Please follow this guide:

VLC Direct Pro issue:
ReplyDeleteI an trying to stream from my Mac to Android Zoom.
Really appreciate your assistance.
Hi Ichigo,
ReplyDeleteplease check out this link: http://vlcdirect.blogspot.com/2012/01/streaming-from-pcmac-to-android-not.html
